For most of those present, the traditional welcome event for first semester students in Kiel University's (CAU) largest lecture hall building today (Monday 14 October) marks the start of a new chapter in their lives. Reason enough for the University Board, the student union (AStA), Studentenwerk, faculties and numerous university institutions to welcome the freshers and celebrate the start of their studies with them.
4,238 new students have registered so far for the winter semester 2024/25 at Kiel University. 3,528 of them are starting a Bachelor's degree, diploma or state examination degree programme. There are 3,221 students in their first university semester. This means that Kiel University has reached the previous year's level in terms of first semester numbers. Further places on selected degree programmes with restricted admission will be awarded by drawing lots in the coming weeks.
A warm welcome
Around 2,500 new university members are expected in the Audimax today. Thanks to simultaneous English interpretation via headset, the international students will also be able to follow the varied stage programme. In addition, the freshers' welcome ceremony will be broadcast via live stream.
Kiel University Vice President, Professor Dr Markus Hundt, welcomes the new students to their alma mater today: "Welcome aboard, dear freshers! I wish you an exciting, instructive and great time at university - even if things get stormy. Teaching and learning at Kiel University is not a one-way street, which is why I would like to encourage you to contribute your ideas and skills to help shape life on campus and the future of Kiel University. We are delighted to welcome you and look forward to our journey together."
Kiel's mayor, Renate Treutel, is pleased to welcome many new young people to the city: "Students make up a significant part of our urban society. They don't just contribute a young flair, but are clever minds who are willing and able to get involved and think in an interdisciplinary way to influence the development of our city. Cooperation and participation are very important here in our compact city and everyone benefits from this."
Together with host, Rafael Vester, the deans will introduce their new students to the eight faculties in two groups. Laura Falk, Fritz Herkenhoff and Janina Sinemus will introduce the student union (AStA) and invite the freshers to get involved. Johanna Usinger will present the counselling and support services offered by the Studentenwerk SH.
Varied welcome programme
An information fair in the Audimax foyer and in the fair tent on the forecourt with almost 60 exhibitors will offer interesting information about Kiel University. This includes the Central Academic Advisors, the University Library and the Sports Centre. The City of Kiel and Kiel Theatre will provide information on what the city has to offer. The Studentenwerk and many university groups will also be presenting a wide range of topics.
