The 67th Annual Meeting of the Louisiana Mosquito Control Association (LMCA) will be held in New Orleans from Dec. 10 through 12. This meeting brings together operational administrators, staff members, educators, students, state employees, and industry representatives from across the state to discuss best practices for mosquito abatement and preventing the diseases they transmit based on sound scientific principles. Each year, in conjunction with the professional meeting, a day is designated to invite local schools to educate students about mosquitoes and the activities of local mosquito abatement districts.
The Annual LMCA Education Day will be held Tuesday, December 10th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the NOMTRCB Building located at 2100 Leon C. Simon Dr. This event will introduce over 500 students from 5 local schools to mosquito biology, surveillance, and control methods.
The LMCA Education Committee is composed of mosquito abatement professionals from the NOMTRCB Board, East Baton Rouge Mosquito Abatement and Rodent Control, West Baton Rouge Mosquito Control, Iberia Parish Mosquito District, Jefferson Davis Parish Mosquito Abatement, Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control, Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement and Tulane University. Members of the LMCA Education Committee and NOMTRCB employees will staff exhibits designed to provide students and teachers with instructional hands-on experience. Students will be presented with concepts on general mosquito biology (habitat), life cycle (metamorphosis), morphology (speciation), behavior, medical importance, and equipment used to control mosquitoes. The goal of this event is to stimulate students' interest in science through an interactive experience and empower them with an understanding of mosquito biology and the integrated efforts to manage them.
