Rep. Watson Coleman Hosts 4th &Girls Conference to Engage, Uplift, and Empower Black Girls

Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) hosted the 4th &Girls conference at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), a day-long seminar to engage, uplift and empower Black girls in middle and high school.

The first &Girls conference was held in 2017. It is part of the ongoing work of the members of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls to highlight and address the unique needs and issues impacting Black girls.

More than 100 girls attended the conference, which featured five breakout sessions and addresses by prominent Black women leaders, including NJ Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), several members of the New Jersey General Assembly, as well as local officials, academics, and business leaders.

"I know personally the challenges Black girls face in this world,"said Rep. Watson Coleman. "Opportunities don't present themselves to us, we have to create them. That's part of what we try to do with this conference. Empower Black girls, engage with them and lift them up so they know that they belong in every room they find themselves in. So they know their voices are valued, their contributions necessary, and their ideas should be heard. Spending the day with so many wonderful leaders and so many brilliant young people never fails to fill my heart with joy and hope for the future."

"Young Black girls are taking control and advocating for what they need and deserve to lead happy, healthy lives - despite the challenges in their way," said Rep. Robin Kelly. "The conference is a reminder that they are not alone in their efforts. I, and so many Black women leaders, am here to encourage them and applaud every step they take."
