Malibu Library Speaker Series with Planetarium Director Derrick Pitts

The 2024 Malibu Library Speaker Series continues with Derrick Pitts, Chief Astronomer and Planetarium Director of the Fels Planetarium at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Tuesday, August 13, 7:00 PM in the Civic Theater at Malibu City Hall.

Derrick Pitts is currently the Chief Astronomer and Director of the Fels Planetarium at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He's been associated with the Franklin Institute since 1978, designing and presenting many of the museum's public programs and exhibits. He's also been a NASA Solar System Ambassador since 2009. For more than two decades, Derrick has hosted award-winning astronomy radio programs for Philadelphia's two public radio stations and created signature astronomy television programming for PBS.

I encourage the community to join Derrick as he takes us on a journey through the galaxy, searching for planets similar to Earth that may harbor life," said Mayor Doug Stewart. "The Malibu Library Speaker Series continues to bring excellent speakers to Malibu that educate, inspire and entertain, elevating our community's cultural life."

Pitts will delve into the fascinating world of astrobiology, taking the audience on the search for Earth-like planets elsewhere in the galaxy. Soon, we may find an Earth twin. He asks the questions: what are we really looking for in the search - a new place to live, or the answer to one of our most basic needs?
