STATEMENT ON SABAH SOVEREIGNTY

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of a video circulating on social media, containing baseless and misleading content that questions the sovereignty of the state of Sabah as an integral part of Malaysia. The Ministry is undertaking a thorough investigation in cooperation with the relevant Ministries and Agencies on the matter.

At this juncture, the Ministry wishes to reiterate the long-standing position of the Government of Malaysia as follows:

i. Sabah has always been an integral part of Malaysia;

ii. Malaysia has never and will not recognise any claims on Sabah;

iii. Sabah is recognised by the United Nations (UN) and the international community as part of Malaysia since the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963; and

iv. The people of Sabah had exercised their self-determination rights on the formation of Malaysia through the 1962 Cobbold Commission.

The Government of Malaysia will continue its efforts to defend the sovereignty of Sabah as an integral part of Malaysia, and ensure that Malaysia's sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests are protected at all times.
