Hispanic musician to share his music of the Salterio

Hispanic musician Miguel Pacheco is coming from Mexico to Pittsburg on Sept. 18 to perform on the Salterio, a version of the hammered dulcimer that has been played in Mexico for a very long time, in a 7 p.m. concert at McCray Hall at Pittsburg State University.

Instead of being hammered, the Salterio is plucked, and also has a chromatic tuning.

His is the second of six concerts planned as part of the university's first Hispanic Music Festival, organized by piano instructor Isaac Hernandez, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Pacheco was born in Mexico City and began his musical studies when he was 7 years old with his father. He joined a professional orchestra in 1986.

He has since taken his love of Mexican music to all the states of Mexico and countries such as the U.S., Costa Rica, Argentina, France, Monaco, Korea, and Germany, among others. He has been featured on more than 100 albums for many artists and has been a maker of psalteries - a type of fretboard-less box zither - for four decades.

The concert will be free for campus and community.

Remaining concerts in the festival will showcase other visiting Hispanic musicians, as well as Hispanic and non-Hispanic students, faculty, alumni, and community members.
