Palmdale Unveils Stunning Mural on the Exterior of the Palmdale Playhouse

PALMDALE, CA - The City of Palmdale is thrilled to announce a breathtaking new addition to the Palmdale Playhouse. On Thursday, Dec. 12, the City hosted an unveiling for its newest mural, "The Curtain Calls," created by husband-and-wife duo MJ Lindo-Lawyer and Joshua Lawyer of Santa Rosa-based Rough Edge Collective and assisted in the painting by Monty Guy.

"Palmdale has a rich history of artistic spirit and diversity," said Mayor Austin Bishop. "It was a pleasure to be able to spotlight this magnificent piece and share its vibrant imagery with residents."

The 152-foot-wide narrative artwork features a highly detailed reflection of the Playhouse's historic theatrical programs on the façade of the building that celebrates the community's diversity. The first scene shows characters from the Wizard of Oz peeking out from behind a red curtain, with the original brick schoolhouse serving as the backdrop, symbolizing the Emerald City. The setting is enriched by a local landscape featuring Joshua trees and a small silhouette of a B2 Bomber flying overhead.

In the second part, the tension builds as characters from Treasure Island are introduced. The final section showcases a singer in the spotlight, accompanied by a bouquet of wildflowers that signifies the conclusion of a remarkable performance. This leads to a display of costumes and props behind the scenes, which includes a ballet tutu and pointe shoes, Don Quixote's lance, a Sherlock Holmes costume, ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz, a Robin Hood costume, a guitar and a prop skull. Lastly, a picture of the two-headed llama from Dr. Dolittle hangs on the wall. The mural is completed with a red curtain on the right and Audrey from the musical Little Shop of Horrors.

The unveiling was an inspiring event, with the audience erupting in cheers as the artists put the finishing touches on the remarkable installation. Residents are invited to experience this incredible artwork firsthand - it's a sight you won't want to miss!

"The City will always be a place to celebrate our unique melting pot community," said Mayor Pro Tem Richard J. Loa. "This piece represents not only a history of the arts at the Playhouse, but also a resolute commitment to continued cultural expression."

MJ Lindo-Lawyer has been painting stories since 2003. She focuses on the experiences and daily existence of multicultural women in this world. She has painted murals all over California and has brushed numerous canvases. Her work challenges the viewers to explore deeper by evoking strong emotion, imagination and celebration. She was joined by her husband, Joshua Lawyer, a talented artist in his own right known for his fine art and sketches. His work centers around major narrative themes such as "finding home" and "getting lost," which drive the passion of his designs.
