McGarry is a jazz vocalist, composer and educator who has performed on some of the world's most recognized stages including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Berlin Jazz Fest. During her decade in New York, she served as a Lincoln Center Teaching Artist and a U.S. State Department Jazz Ambassador in the program American Music Abroad, touring Albania, Brazil, Chile, China, Mongolia and Romania.

McGarry has released seven albums and been nominated for Grammy Awards in 2009, 2019 and 2021.

"The UToledo Department of Music has been working to establish an annual concert event in Jon Hendricks's name. The Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert raises funds to create a music scholarship in his name, supporting future jazz students at UToledo, and we're excited to welcome a guest artist this year who embodies the spirit of its namesake," said Dr. Jason Stumbo, chair of the Department of Music. "Kate McGarry is a Grammy-nominated and esteemed jazz artist whose performance shouldn't be missed."

Hendricks, one of the originators of the jazz singing technique known as "vocalese," was a local jazz legend and a faculty member in the UToledo Department of Music before he died in 2017.
