National Senior Center Month is Here!

DENTON, TX, Sept. 2, 2024 - Every September, we like to celebrate National Senior Center month to shine a light on the importance of senior centers in local communities. The National Council on Aging (NCOA) has deemed this year's theme as 'Powering Connections.' This truly hits home with our staff and patrons on how the Denton Senior Centers serve as a connection point for so many. Read on for a few examples on how the centers power connections.

Each morning, front line staff start the day at the center greeting members with a smile and a warm cup of coffee. As people enter through the doors, some are here for a workout in the fitness gym or one of the many group exercise classes, connecting them to their health and others in the community. For some, they walk in with no specific reason other than they needed to get out of the house and talk to somebody. Working at the senior centers give staff the unique opportunity to chat and learn from so many personalities in our city. The centers serve as a physical place for people to gather, socialize, move, and create. The types of programs and events offered are planned with intention for physical and emotional connections.

Aside from the social connections, the senior centers often serve as a trusted networking and referral ground. Several times a day, citizens call looking for answers about social security, insurance, help finding a place to live, and so much more. Our staff is committed to quality service, so we spend time networking with senior service industry professionals in the area and educating ourselves on services that exist to aid Denton residents of all ages. Some of our favorite moments are when we successfully connect residents with the right person or service to help them get what they need!

Another fun way we power connections is through our extended and local trip programs. Inside and outside city limits, there is a variety of culture, arts, and unique experiences we connect people to. Whether it is a trip to the Dallas Museum of Art, a musical at the Firehouse Theatre, or an unforgettable trip to Greece, there is a way for residents to connect to new experiences that will create lifelong friendships and memories.

Celebrate National Senior Center Month with us by checking out some of the ways you can connect to your community at either American Legion Hall Senior Center or Denton Senior Center!
