Temporary Closures of Gilman Street at I-80 Gilman Interchange in Berkeley August 15-17, 2024

Published: Aug 14, 2024

BERKELEY / ALAMEDA COUNTY ― Caltrans has scheduled temporary closures of Gilman Street between 2nd Street and 4th Street near the Interstate 80 Gilman interchange two nights and one day.

Gilman Street will be closed in both directions between Second Street and Fourth Street to accommodate improvements being performed on Gilman including curb and gutter modifications.

Schedule:

Thursday, August 15: Close at 7 p.m., reopen at 6 a.m. the next morning
Friday, August 16: Close at 7 p.m., remain closed until 5 p.m. the next day
Saturday, August 17: Reopen at 5 p.m.

There will be flaggers at Gilman and Second Street and at Gilman and Fourth Street that will allow local traffic through.

Detours

Drivers traveling west on Gilman Street should turn left onto Fourth Street, drive south on Fourth Street, turn right on Cedar Street, right at Eastshore Highway, then back onto Gilman.

Drivers going east on Gilman should turn right onto 2nd Street and travel south to Cedar Street, then make a left onto Cedar Street and then turn right back onto Gilman.

The temporary roundabout currently in place on the east side will remain and a new temporary roundabout on the west side will be added. See map below.

Drivers on northbound West Frontage Road heading to Tom Bates Sports Complex should continue to follow the existing detour: 1) From West Frontage Road, make a slight right into the roundabout. 2) Go under the bridge. 3) At the east roundabout, loop around to go westbound (under the bridge). At west roundabout, take the roundabout exit toward Tom Bates/Golden Gate Fields.

The Gilman Street pedestrian overcrossing, which opened to the public in May, will remain open and all other elements of the interchange will be unchanged. The temporary roundabout on Gilman Street west of the Second Street intersection will remain in place.

Caltrans thanks pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists for your patience as we work to improve the Gilman Street intersection. Every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the traveling public.

Proper signs and pavement delineation, as well as portable changeable message signs, will be installed to guide cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

Pedestrians will not be allowed to cross under the I-80 bridge during this phase of construction; they should use the newly opened pedestrian overcrossing on the south side of the interchange.

While the overcrossing will be open to the public, pedestrians, cyclists and anyone using the roundabout should use caution, as it is in an active construction zone. All traffic approaching the roundabout is required to yield to the traffic already in the roundabout.
