GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in McIntosh County

McIntosh County, GA (July 26, 2024) - At the request of the McIntosh County Sheriff's Office, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Townsend, McIntosh County, Georgia. Allen Barrett, age 75, of Townsend, GA, was shot and injured in the incident. No deputies were injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that at around 5:20 a.m., the Wiregrass E911 Communication Center received a 911 call from a man, later identified as Barrett, from a home located in the 1200 block of Woodstork Dr. NE in Townsend, GA. During the call, Barrett made suicidal comments which led the dispatcher to send McIntosh County Deputies to the home. When deputies arrived, they encountered Barrett on the porch. Deputies noticed that Barrett had a gun.

McIntosh County Deputies began negotiating with Barrett. During the negotiations Barrett pulled out the gun and shot at the deputies. A deputy then returned fire, hitting Barrett.

Barrett was taken to the hospital for treatment and is currently in stable condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, it will be given to the Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
