Encouraging a diverse range of talents in technical fields is essential for fostering innovation. At Nuvera, we value the varied perspectives that are crucial for advancing our clean energy technology solutions. Individuals from all backgrounds bring unique insights and skills that drive our industry forward and enhance our progress.
This month, we are spotlighting two of our talented colleagues at Nuvera: Kristina Backler, Project Specialist in NPD Procurement and Supply Chain, and Carly Baracco, Design Engineer II in Engineering Operations. We sat down with Kristina and Carly to learn about their journeys and experiences in the world of hydrogen fuel cells, showcasing their contributions to the clean energy industry.
Tell us about your role here at Nuvera.
Carly:As a design engineer, I focus on implementing engineering changes, which often involves redlining and updating drawings based on requests from manufacturing or other teams. My responsibilities also include planning and executing component testing and troubleshooting issues with existing products. My daily tasks can vary significantly-some days are more documentation-heavy, while others find me working directly in the machine shop on parts or in the lab running tests.
Kristina:Inmy role as a new product development supply chain specialist, I support our R&D engineering teams in procuring high-quality components for new products in development. This involves managing supplier relations, handling request for quote, negotiating costs, organizing internal team discussions, and reviewing project risks. My goal is to work to have the best components to bring our innovative products to life.
What did your path to your current role look like?
Carly:My journey began with several product design classes in college, which solidified my passion for mechanical engineering. I started my career as a mechanical design engineer at a medical device company, where I supported manufacturing processes. From there, I transitioned to a vacuum products company as a mechanical engineer. Joining Nuvera as a design engineer allowed me to dive into the fascinating world of hydrogen technology and to continue evolving in my field.
Kristina: My path to this role has been a bit unconventional. I spent the majority of my career in category management for a large foodservice distribution company. The skills I developed in supplier negotiations, project management, and efficient supply chain practices have greatly benefited my current role at Nuvera. I've applied my experience to a new industry while continuing to learn and grow.
How does working in this space make your job unique?
Carly: Working in this space makes my job unique because of the specific requirements for hydrogen technology. Designing parts for hydrogen systems requires a deep understanding of the materials needed to withstand the chemicals, temperatures, and pressures these parts will encounter. This adds a level of complexity and precision that makes every project both challenging and rewarding.
Kristina: When I discovered Nuvera, I was energized to learn about hydrogen fuel cells and their positive impacts on the environment. What makes working in this space so unique is that it's an emerging industry. I'm conveying a future to potential suppliers and partnering with those that share in our hydrogen vision.
What drew you to working at Nuvera?
Carly:The opportunity to work with hydrogen as a clean energy source was the main factor that drew me to Nuvera. I was excited about the opportunity to contribute to the clean energy sector and be part of something that has a positive impact on the environment.
Kristina: What initially attracted me to Nuvera was the environmental purpose behind our products. However, working alongside the exceptional engineering and manufacturing teams on such fascinating technology has been the unexpected cherry on top.
How would you describe Nuvera's culture? What stands out to you about your colleagues and the projects you work on?
Carly: Nuvera has a unique blend of a friendly, collaborative camaraderie and a strong drive to produce high-quality work. Everyone I work with is not only intelligent but also committed to doing things the right way. The culture here is welcoming, and people are always willing to share their knowledge.
Kristina: Nuvera's culture is highly collaborative and forward-thinking. We're looking years ahead to anticipate our customers' needs and designing technology to exceed those expectations. This requires employees who think out-of-the-box and have the determination to "get it done". It has been incredibly rewarding to work with such a motivated team.
What recent project or achievement at Nuvera are you most proud of, and why?
Carly: One of the projects I am most proud of working on at Nuvera is the fuel cell component freeze testing I did earlier this year. I was involved in every step of the process, starting with ideation and working through writing the test plan, doing the testing, processing the data and culminating writing and presenting the report. It was eye-opening to see the comprehensive nature of a project, and exciting to engage in each step hands-on. I am excited that the data I gathered will contribute to the development of the next-generation EN-125 engine!
Kristina: During my time with Nuvera, I am most proud of the newest ninth generation fuel cell stack, which is successfully advancing to the next phase of development and testing. It is exciting to see it come to life from concept to operation and to know that my contribution sourcing the components played a key role in making it happen.
Why does working in clean energy resonate with you?
Carly:I feel that it is important to do what we can to alleviate the climate crisis and working at a clean energy company offers a direct way to make a meaningful impact.
Kristina: As a parent of a young child, I am deeply passionate about ensuring a healthy planet for future generations. Contributing to clean energy solutions aligns with my commitment to creating a better world for my child and others.
What are the most important skills you've gained working at Nuvera so far?
Carly:I have learned a lot about communication and teamwork and have been presented with opportunities to develop my leadership and project management skills.
Kristina: A skill I have gained at Nuvera has been the ability to connect technical details to broader project impacts. During engineering design meetings, I've learned to understand the main ideas and translate them into project impacts and actionable next steps for coordinating with supplier partners.
What advice do you have for younger women or students interested in a career in your field?
Carly:Build a strong support network of both peers and mentors. Although STEM fields are becoming more gender-balanced, they are still largely male-dominated, and navigating the politics and dynamics can be challenging. Having a reliable support system-comprised of both men and women-can provide valuable guidance, sanity checks, and encouragement during tough times. My support system has been essential in helping me overcome challenges and celebrate achievements, and I am incredibly grateful for their presence in my life.
Kristina:Don't be afraid to explore industries outside of your experience or academic background. Doing so will broaden your knowledge and may lead you to a company that aligns with your personal values!Give yourself time and trust that the skills you've developed are applicable across various industries. With passion and an open mind, you'll continue to learn and grow, finding opportunities that resonate with you.
