Unique programming helps new Thompson Scholars adjust to University's vibrant learning community

Home to one of the largest non-endowed scholarship programs of its kind in the nation, Bowling Green State University welcomed its newest cohort of students this fall in the Thompson Working Families Scholarship Program.

Created by Robert Thompson '55, '06 (Hon.) and Ellen (Bowen) Thompson '54, '06 (Hon.), the unique program supports students from modest backgrounds by covering much of the cost of tuition while still requiring a financial investment in earning their degree. Scholars must also maintain high academic standards and volunteer their time on campus and in the community, continuing the Thompson's legacy of service.

As part of the Thompson Working Families Scholarship Program, many first-year recipients participate in the Thompson Summer Link Program prior to the start of the academic year, providing early move-in, connections with key campus resources and meetings with fellow students and program leaders.

"The Thompsons are a big reason I came to BGSU. I wouldn't be able to attend college without their support," said first-year Thompson Scholar Tyler West from Girard, Ohio, near Youngstown. "I loved that the scholarship was more than just financial assistance. It requires community service, high academic standards and the ability to meet new students who are also part of the program."

As a first-generation college student and an only child, West described the process of applying to college as intimidating, but said knowing he would have support from Thompson Scholarship Programs made the journey less stressful.

"Thanks to the efforts and support of my mom, I was able to apply to BGSU for tourism, hospitality and event management, and the generosity of the Thompsons made it a reality," West said. "I already feel supported here at BGSU, and I can't wait for the next four years."

West's journey to BGSU for Fall 2024 was made possible through a deepened commitment by the Thompsons to student success. In May, the Thompsons announced their continued support of BGSU and its students with a historic announcement of $121 million in scholarships and the possibility of an additional $30 million to extend the program beyond 2035. If realized, the Thompsons will have contributed $150 million to student scholarships at BGSU. The contribution is the largest in BGSU history and the largest single gift ever designated to student scholarships in Ohio.

Through an innovative public-private philanthropic approach, BGSU also is committed to matching Thompson scholarship funding dollar-for-dollar for each student and ensuring that scholars graduate in four years or fewer.

As part of the Thompson Summer Link Program, current scholars helped new students learn more about BGSU and the extensive resources available to them, providing insight on the program through their own experiences and interactions with the advising team.

"Last year's Summer Link really helped prepare me for my first semester at BGSU," said Ian Brown, a sophomore Thompson Scholar. "Being on the other side of the experience as a Summer Link Leader, it feels great to help new scholars get started on the right foot, begin new friendships and learn more about campus."

Through the programming, Summer Link leaders educate incoming students on the expectations of Thompson Scholars, the differences between high school and college, and building meaningful relationships and connections in the learning community.

"The programming allows students to familiarize themselves with campus, determine where their classes are and where they can find help when needed," sophomore Summer Link leader Kayleigh Kordish said. "Thanks to Summer Link, my first day was a breeze. I remember feeling less stressed and so prepared. I was able to hit the ground running, and I hope I can help other students feel the same."

Thompson Scholarship Programs Director Mary Kay Inkrott Hiser added that the Summer Link Program provides a head start that helps scholars tremendously.

"Summer Link is a signature piece for our incoming scholars. The goal behind it is to allow them to be prepared and comfortable for the first week of classes," Inkrott Hiser said. "Having that extra week to meet fellow scholars and our amazing staff, discover campus and learn more about the networking and resources BGSU has to offer can make a big impact on their next four years. They quickly realize that it's more than just the money, it's a network of support and care."

The Thompson Working Families Scholarship Program is designed to be more than financial assistance; it adds academic accountability and requirements for civic engagement. As part of the program, scholars must complete 20 hours of approved service each year, maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and earn at least 30 credit hours per year.

"The Thompsons gave me the push and resources to put myself out there as a student and as a volunteer," said fourth-year scholar and three-time Link Leader Blake Thomas. "They have allowed me to be compassionate toward others and share the passion of civic engagement that honors their legacy. The Thompsons have created this network of people who are passionate about helping others and who value hard work."

Brown echoed Thomas, stating the Thompsons have not only helped make higher education a reality for him, but they have also shaped his future.

"The Thompsons encourage students to make new connections and give back to the community," he said. "I have gotten to know so many people through the program, including my roommate this year. The Thompson Scholarship is more than a scholarship, it's part of your college experience."

Embarking on his first semester at BGSU as a Thompson Scholar, West said he feels excited and grateful to be part of a supportive learning community that is committed to education and personal growth.

"I am excited to settle in on campus and make new lifelong friends," West said. "I'm really happy to be attending BGSU, knowing that I have the support of faculty, staff, my fellow peers and alumni like the Thompsons."
