Join City of Brampton in recognizing Fire Prevention Week

BRAMPTON, ON (October 1, 2024) - The City of Brampton and Brampton Fire and Emergency Services are recognizing Fire Prevention Week (FPW) from October 5 to October 12, 2024. This year's theme, 'Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You', emphasizes the importance of smoke alarms in keeping families safe.

Brampton Fire has participated in Fire Prevention Week for over 50 years, educating the community on fire safety and prevention. Fire Prevention Week commemorates the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and is an annual opportunity to learn how to stay safe in the event of a fire. Brampton Fire and Emergency Services personnel provide lifesaving public education to reduce fire-related casualties and injuries.

2024 Fire Prevention Week Theme

This year's theme highlights the importance of having properly installed, maintained and tested smoke alarms throughout the home. Key safety tips include:

  • Install smoke alarms outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Ensure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years or if they do not respond to testing.
