India’s new Bioeconomy Policy

ICGEB New Delhi: the New BioE3 policy of the Government of India has been communicated; a commitment to revitalise Biotechnology in the country.

On 24 August 2024, the Union Cabinet of India, chaired by the Prime Minister, approved the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy for Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing.

The BioE3 policy includes innovation-driven support to R&D and entrepreneurship across thematic sectors to accelerate technology development. It aims to establish Biomanufacturing, Bio-AI hubs, and biofoundries. The Policy will be implemented by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India to foster a more advanced, sustainable, and innovative response to global challenges, operating through Organisations, such as the ICGEB, in India.

Addressing national priorities, the BioE3 Policy aims to broadly focus on the strategic thematic sectors of high-value bio-based chemicals, biopolymers, and enzymes; smart proteins and functional foods; precision biotherapeutics; climate resilient agriculture; carbon capture and its utilisation. These areas cover many of the fields of action of ICGEB and secure its activities for sustainable global development.
