Bellevue affirms commitment to eliminating roadway fatalities

Joins over 180 organizations in USDOT's Allies in Action campaign

The City of Bellevue has reiterated its commitment to Vision Zero, joining the U.S. Department of Transportation's Allies in Action along with 16 other public and private organizations.

By joining Allies in Action, Bellevue and the other organizations have committed to taking tangible actions to eliminate traffic deaths. The new Allies in Action bring the total number of allies to over 180, including partners from all levels of government, private businesses, community groups and nonprofit organizations across the country.

This commitment builds on the city's Vision Zero work, which first started in 2015. Bellevue's Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious-injury collisions on city streets by 2030 through the Safe System approach. The city prepares a progress report and action plan each year to document and guide its Vision Zero road safety work. Bellevue's Allies in Action commitment includes furthering the work of the 2024 Vision Zero Action Plan, as well as actions to be completed in 2025, such as additional road safety audits, improvements in the speed safety camera program and further tests of adaptive pedestrian signals.

Allies in Action is part of USDOT's National Roadway Safety Strategy, which was launched in 2022 in response to the crisis of roadway deaths in America. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 40,990 people died in traffic crashes in 2023.
