September 9 2024: Tropical Storm Francine update

The City of Galveston continues to monitor Tropical Storm Francine. At this time the City of Galveston is not within the cone of uncertainty nor are we under any tropical storm warnings or watches. The modeling continues to indicate a landfalling hurricane in Louisiana. Galveston impacts at this point will be gusty winds to minimal tropical storm levels, elevated tides of 2-4 feet, wave run-up on beaches, and up to 4 inches of rain as the storm passes to our south and east. This rain will most likely coincide with the elevated tides so drainage may be impeded should heavier rains fall.

The timing of tides and rain appears to be from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon. The Emergency Operations Center will be activated at Level 2 on Tuesday afternoon and remain open throughout the event on Wednesday. Residents may call 409-765-3710 with any storm-related questions or concerns.

The City is in communication with Centerpoint Energy. There is some chance of power interruption as a result of the gusty winds and rains. Prepare accordingly if power is needed for medical or life-saving needs.

Please continue to monitor the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center for important weather updates.
