Recognizing Probation/Parole and Community Supervision Officers

In recognition of the important public service provided by the state's probation/parole officers, Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed July 21-27, 2024, as Probation, Parole and Community Supervision Officers' Week in North Carolina.

In recognition of the important public service provided by the state's probation/parole officers, Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed July 21-27, 2024, as Probation, Parole and Community Supervision Officers' Week in North Carolina.

"Our probation and parole officers play a critical role in maintaining public safety in North Carolina," said Gov. Cooper. "These dedicated officers help those they supervise make a successful return to their communities which improves public safety and strengthens our communities. I am grateful for their service."

"Being a probation and parole officer is a challenging and demanding career," said Department of Adult Correction Secretary Todd Ishee. Our officers step up every day and do whatever it takes to help guide and encourage people under supervision to complete their probation, parole or post-release supervision."

More than 2,000 probation and parole officers supervise approximately 75,000 individuals in North Carolina who are serving probation, parole or post-release supervision. They also work with community agencies and local reentry councils to provide services and support to formerly incarcerated individuals.

"Our officers wear so many different hats - those of law enforcement, counselor, coach and mentor. Helping people be successful means fewer victims, less crime and safer communities," said Division of Community Supervision Deputy Secretary Tracy K. Lee. "They are always ready and willing to assist in time of need, be it cases of natural disaster, civil unrest or assisting our law enforcement partners. I am very proud of these great professionals."

In advance of PPO Week, the Division of Community Supervision held its annual employee recognition ceremony recently at NC State's McKimmon Center. Awards were presented to Probation/Parole Officers, Chief Probation/Parole Officers, Assistant Judicial District Managers and Judicial District Managers.
