Maxime Bertrand appointed new CBC Ombudsman

CBC/Radio-Canada today announced the appointment of Maxime Bertrand as CBC Ombudsman, for a five-year term. She will officially assume her new duties on November 18, 2024, succeeding Jack Nagler, who has served in the role since 2018.

Currently, Bertrand is the Director of Community Relations for Radio-Canada, responsible for reviewing and responding to complaints and comments from members of the public. She previously spent more than 30 years as a journalist for the national public broadcaster, reporting in both English and French in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Sudbury, and Windsor.

"At a time when trust in journalism is more important than ever, Maxime's extensive career at CBC/Radio-Canada is an enormous asset. She has dedicated her career to accountable, transparent journalism that adheres to the highest ethical standards. Maxime will be an excellent ombudsman and I congratulate her on her new role.

"I also want to thank Jack Nagler for the professionalism and rigour he has shown in his time as ombudsman. Jack, we appreciate your service and wish you all the best in retirement."

- Catherine Tait, President and CEO, CBC/Radio-Canada

Odgers Berndtson conducted the independent recruitment process that resulted in Bertrand's appointment.

CBC/Radio-Canada has two ombudsmen: one for CBC and one for Radio-Canada. Their job is to investigate complaints regarding compliance with our Journalistic Standards and Practices. The ombudsmen are independent of program staff and management, reporting directly to the President and CEO and, through the President, to the Corporation's Board of Directors.

CBC's ombudsman can be reached through our website.
