Update: City Council discussion on 2028 Summer Olympics agreement

October 10, 2024 3:45 PM

The Santa Monica City Council held a robust public discussion Tuesday regarding the proposed Games Agreement to host the beach volleyball competition at Santa Monica State Beach during the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. This study session was the culmination of more than a year of hard work and effort on behalf of the Santa Monica community and was an opportunity for the council and the public to understand the financial implications of entering into this critical agreement.

Santa Monica is an iconic tourist destination and the perfect venue for beach volleyball, given that it's the birthplace of the modern sport. Tuesday's discussion reflected the desire by the council to transparently weigh the options and determine whether the proposed agreement was best for our unique community.

Ultimately, the council directed staff to continue negotiating with LA28 and come back with an agreement that is informed with community feedback and includes tangible community benefits, and greater clarity and assurances about financial and other impacts on residents and businesses, particularly on and around the Santa Monica Pier.

We thank LA28 for their ongoing partnership in these negotiations and for sending representatives to make a brief statement at the public meeting. We look forward to continuing talks and hope to come to an agreement that works for everyone.
