CUPD: Safety tips and resources for Campus Safety Month

September is designated as Campus Safety Month and the Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) reminds students, faculty and staff of the important role that you play in campus safety. It takes the joint effort of the entire University community to make Clemson University the safest place that it can be.

Personal Safety Tips

• Stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings.
• Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave.
• Avoid isolated areas.
• Avoid walking or jogging alone at night. Use Clemson Nightline or go with friends.
• Be an active bystander.
  • If you think someone is at risk of assault or abuse, consider it an emergency and act to support that person.
  • You can call the police, ask for help from other people, intervene directly, if safe, or create a distraction to help remove the potential victim from the situation.
• If you feel you are being followed, try to get the attention of people nearby, run/walk to a well-lit and/or more populated area, and call 911 to ask for help.
• If you see something, say something! Report any suspicious activity to CUPD immediately. Call or text 911 or use the Text CU Dispatch feature in the Rave Guardian app.

CUPD shares these tips while recognizing that perpetrators, and not their victims or survivors, are solely responsible for their actions.

• Clemson University Emergency Management - Learn more about personal preparedness and what to do in an emergency.
• Student Health Services - Provides quality medical and mental health care, public health leadership, and initiatives that enhance the academic success of students while also promoting health, safety, and well-being of the campus community.
• Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) - Offers personal counseling, psychological testing, outreach and consultation.
• Interpersonal Violence Resource Alliance - A group of trauma-informed resources available to the University community, consisting of representatives from offices across campus who provide interpersonal violence-related services.
