October 2024 Notice of Flight Operations

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi - Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for October 2024:

October 2 between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. a fire crew will conduct wildfire suppression efforts, assess the potential for future fire spread, and survey fire impacts near Nāpau crater, around the 3,500-ft. elevation.

October 16 between 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa, between 4,000- and 9,000-ft. elevation.

October 22 between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. for invasive tree control and mapping, from 800- and 3,500-ft. elevation in the Ka'ū desert to Pepeiao area and a single point in the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano.

October 28 between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. for transport of crew and equipment for fence replacement on Mauna Loa between 4000- and 6,500-ft. elevation.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
