Brick by Brick: Inaugural LEGO® Competition Shines at CommUniversity Day

Building enthusiasts of all ages unleashed their creativity and showcased their love for the community at Stony Brook University's first-ever LEGO® competition, part of CommUniversity Day on September 28.

Brick builders showcased their own unique LEGO® creations that embodied their vision of community.

The panel of judges included Bill Wertheim, executive vice president for Stony Brook Medicine; Carl Lejuez, provost; Carol Gomes, chief executive officer and chief operating officer at Stony Brook University Hospital; David Wrobel, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; New York State Senator Anthony H. Palumbo; Assemblyman Ed Flood; Council Member Jonathan Kornreich; Mayor of Port Jefferson Lauren Sheprow; Port Jefferson Village Trustee Zena Ugrinsky; and Rachel Joffee, owner of Bricks and MiniFigs of West Babylon, who donated prizes and advised on competition criteria.

Each entry was judged on creativity, originality, and how well it represents the theme.

The winners of the 2024 LEGO® competition were:

First Place: Alby He (4th grade, Nassakeag Elementary School, East Setauket, NY) and Irene He (1st grade, Nassakeag Elementary School, East Setauket, NY), for "Dreamland"
Second Place: Jeliana Gonzalez (4th grade, Girls Prep, Bronx, NY), for "Heart Lake City"
Fan Favorite: Grayson Finnegan (4th grade, New Lane Elementary School, Selden, NY), for "The Folks of Fridgetopia"

Winners went home withStony Brook University gear and LEGO sets.
