UTSA celebrates longstanding international partnership to advance student success

"We are grateful to the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico for its continued leadership and partnership as we foster existing and create new opportunities for transnational learning that will build bridges between the two countries to advance cultural exchanges and career opportunities for students in the United States and in Mexico," said Eighmy. "I'm confident our students will continue to advance knowledge through this critical partnership and look forward to the ongoing success it will bring both our students and universities at large."

UNAM and UTSA often collaborate through the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), which aims to enhance degree completion, advance research and increase engagement. Through these collaborations, both institutions are supporting their shared goals to advance public research universities.

For example, in October 2023, UNAM and UTSA jointly celebrated the work of Juan O'Gorman, a prominent Mexican architect and artist. Events included scholarly presentations, a public colloquium, a light show of O'Gorman's works and an Altar de Muertos. UNAM San Antonio showcased five animated videos of O'Gorman's work, created by UNAM graduate Abel Zúñiga.

"Our collaboration with UNAM San Antonio has been valuable to students and the community. With our renewed agreement, we look forward to new collaborations in the areas of AI and quantum," said Lisa Montoya, UTSA vice provost for Global Initiatives. "Working with UNAM allows us the opportunity to work across Mexico on issues important to all of North America."

UNAM was founded on September 21, 1551, and is the largest university in Mexico and Latin America. In 1944, the university extended its presence beyond national borders to the United States. With support from the community, the Mexican government and the City of San Antonio, UNAM inaugurated its new facilities in Hemisfair in 1986.
