Property Tax Reductions Available to World War II Veterans

As of July 2024, Illinois will expand eligibility for the Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities (SHEVD) to include World War II veterans, regardless of their disability rating or compensation status.

This significant change recognizes the contributions of these veterans by allowing them to benefit from property tax reductions. Previously, the SHEVD required veterans to have a service-connected disability of at least 30 percent and to receive disability compensation. Under the new rules, veterans from World War II can qualify based solely on their service during the conflict, making it easier for these older veterans to access valuable tax relief.

In addition to the new provisions for WWII veterans, the exemption remains available to disabled veterans with qualifying disabilities who own and occupy their homes as their primary residence. Surviving spouses of eligible veterans can also receive or transfer the exemption under certain conditions.
