Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Lynda Tabuya, while in Bangkok, Thailand, was able to have discussions on gender equality in Thailand and the region this week.
During the meeting with Australian government officials and representatives of UNESCAP, UNICEF, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Minister had the opportunity to learn about the priorities of the issue as well as the work and initiatives of UNICEF, UNESCAP, and UNOHCHR in progressing it in the sub-Asian and sub-Pacific regions.
Minister Tabuya was accompanied by the Second Secretary to Fiji's Mission in Indonesia, Vasiti Cirikiyasawa.
The Minister highlighted the importance of family units in the Pacific context, their role in preventing violence against women, promoting women's economic empowerment, and their role in the care economy.
Topics discussed included the coordination between national agencies supporting crosscutting issues like SRHR, gender barriers, data collection, ageing population and child rights, and the care economy.
Furthermore, the Australian Executive Director for the Office of Women provided an update on Australia's recently launched "Gender Equality Strategy," which focuses on gender-based violence, unpaid and paid care, economic equality and security, health, and leadership, representation, and decision-making.
The meeting was hosted by Australia's Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Ms. Julia Feeny, and attended by Ms. Padma Raman, Australia's Executive Director for the Office of Women, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet; Ms. Lin Yang of UNESCAP; Ms. June Kunugi, Regional Director for UNICEF (East Asia and the Pacific); and Ms. Katia Chirizzi, Deputy Regional Representative of UNOHCHR.
