Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center proudly announces a groundbreaking advancement in vascular care, further solidifying its position as a leader in innovative medical treatments. On October 25, 2024, George DeKornfeld, MD, achieved a historic milestone as the first surgeon in the nation to use the revolutionary Artix™ Thrombectomy System by Inari Medical to treat a clotted upper extremity artery. Dr. DeKornfeld also became the first in Pennsylvania and the third in the United States to utilize this cutting-edge technology.
"This technology represents a significant leap forward in treating arterial clots," said Dr. DeKornfeld. "For patients running out of options, the Artix™ system offers a minimally invasive, precise solution to restore blood flow and save limbs and lives. This is a game-changer for vascular care at Conemaugh Memorial and beyond."
The landmark procedure was performed on a patient who faced potential amputation following multiple failed interventions, including an axillofemoral bypass and other surgical attempts to address severe arterial blockages. Using the Artix™ system, Dr. DeKornfeld successfully removed the clot, preserved the bypass, and saved the patient's leg-a testament to the transformative power of this advanced technology.
Later the same day, John Gray, MD, became the second surgeon in Pennsylvania and the fourth in the United States to employ the Artix™ system, demonstrating its potential for widespread adoption in addressing complex vascular cases.
The Artix™ Thrombectomy System is a first-of-its-kind arterial device from Inari Medical. Designed for precision and efficiency, it features an all-in-one, over-the-wire toolkit that enables surgeons to halt blood flow and safely remove arterial clots using aspiration or mechanical methods. This flexibility is beneficial in treating challenging cases that lack viable solutions.
"With this new technology, Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is setting a national standard for advanced vascular care," said Elizabeth Dunmore, MD, Chief Medical Officer. "Dr. DeKornfeld, Dr. Gray, and their dedicated teams exemplify Conemaugh Memorial's mission to make communities healthier through cutting-edge treatments and compassionate care close to home."
