Learn about your energy use and how to save

Saving energy can save you money on your electric bill, and there are plenty of no-cost ways to conserve. As your community-owned utility, we want to help you save energy all year long, especially during the summer when the demand for electricity is highest.

Below are some simple adjustments we can all make at home to conserve energy; they are free and easy and can help save energy during peak demand hours (4-9 p.m.).

• Try to avoid using multiple appliances like your dishwasher, air conditioner and laundry machines at the same time between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
• Wash full loads of laundry whenever possible and switch your temperature setting from hot to cool/cold to cut energy use in half. About 90% of the energy consumed for washing clothes is used to heat the water.
• Unplug small appliances and electrical devices (e.g., phone chargers, gaming consoles, and laptops) when not in use. You can save up to 10% of your monthly energy use by doing this.
• Clean the coils on the back of your refrigerator (at least annually). This helps the compressor cool faster and run less frequently, which reduces your energy use and extends the life your fridge.
