GREENVILLE, N.C. (12/2/2024) - Bob Greczyn '73, a seasoned health care executive, will be the keynote speaker at East Carolina University's fall commencement ceremony. Almost 2,000 students along with their friends and family will gather to celebrate Friday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Greczyn retired as CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina in 2010 after a decade of leading the company through a comprehensive transformation. His career in health care spanned more than 30 years with the early part of his career focused on rural health initiatives and patient care.

Greczyn had a pivotal role in starting a rural health program in Anson County and later establish a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) in Delaware. He returned to the Triangle as CEO of Carolina Physicians Health Plan (later named HealthSource). In 1998, he joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina where he became president in 1999 and CEO in 2000.

"Bob is a dedicated advocate for East Carolina University. He is a great example to our graduates of what it means to carry out our mission of service," said ECU Chancellor Philip Rogers.

Originally from Hightstown, New Jersey, Greczyn moved to Greenville in 1969 to attend ECU and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. His passion for improving public health led him to pursue a master's degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981.

Throughout his career Greczyn has been committed to ECU, ECU Health and their health care initiatives. He has chaired the ECU Board of Visitors and ECU Board of Trustees and is now the chair of the ECU Health Board of Directors.
