The operational guide created by ENEA and Federalberghi to facilitate energy diagnoses in the hotel industry, which accounts for 4.4% of the electricity consumption of the entire tertiary sector, is online[1]. The monograph is part of the Quaderni dell'efficienza energetica, created as part of the Program Agreement for Electric System Research 2022-2024 funded by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.
The guide, which stems from a long-standing collaboration between ENEA and Federalberghi, is addressed at both companies and professionals in the hotel industry. In addition to providing the information necessary to perform a quality energy diagnosis, it explains how to draw up an energy consumption monitoring plan, reporting the specific reference consumption indexes. It also contains a broad description of possible energy efficiency interventions and a cost/effectiveness analysis of the interventions implemented and proposed by companies in the previous diagnosis cycle.
The publication is based on the analysis of a representative sample of energy diagnoses conducted by operators in the hotel industry and sent to ENEA[2], divided by category of structures (number of stars), type of use (annual or seasonal) and geographical location. Specifically, the study of the energy needs of hotels has highlighted that electricity (from the grid or self-produced by photovoltaic) accounts for approximately 70% of total consumption, while the rest refer to natural gas for 23% and to other energy carriers like diesel, LPG, and heat from district heating.
The analysis of the proposed energy efficiency solutions refers to a sample of 278 interventions which, if implemented, would lead to a saving of 35 GWh/year, of which approximately 50% are electricity savings.
"With approximately 33 thousand hotels for a total of 2.2 million beds, the hotel industry, fundamental for the Italian economy, it's now facing the formidable challenge of energy sustainability. The collaboration with Federalberghi fits into this context and follows the task assigned to ENEA", pointed out Ilaria Bertini, head of the ENEA Department of Energy Efficiency. "This monograph of the Quaderni dell'Efficienza - she said - provides support to workers in the sector in analysing their energy consumption even more carefully and identifying possible efficiency paths, effectively continuing the work started since the publication of the first operational line in 2017".
The operational guide was presented on Friday 21 June 2024 at 2.30 pm in a public event in Agerola (Naples).
