Coroner’s Office to Hold Service and Burial for Unclaimed Decedents
The Peoria County Coroner's Office will be hosting a burial for fifty-eight unclaimed decedents on Friday, November 1, 2024, all of whom have been cremated. The remains of those to be buried can still be claimed up until 4:00 PM the preceding day with the Office providing a list of all scheduled to be memorialized in the upcoming ceremony.
"There are a few reasons why a person may go as unclaimed," explains Chief Deputy Coroner Ben Brewer. "Sometimes family and friends may have a difficult time claiming their loved ones, sometimes a person finds an urn in a house they just moved into, or sometimes a decedent may not have someone close enough to them to claim them." Brewer added that none of the decedents to be buried were veterans during their lifetimes as the Peoria County Veterans Assistance Commission helps claim former military personnel.
The County Coroner's Office has released a list of names of those to be buried, found below. Anyone can claim any remains at the Office located at 506 E. Seneca Place in Peoria up until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2024. Some of the remains on the list have not been claimed for over a decade.
For those not claimed by the deadline, a service will be performed by Coroner Jamie Harwood and Pastor Chad Manbeck, the chaplain for the Coroner's Office. A procession will begin at the Office at 8:50 a.m. with a hearse provided by Wright & Salmon Mortuary, then arrive at 9:00 a.m. at Springdale Cemetery who will be providing the opening and closing at no cost. The remains will be interred in a vault donated by Peoria Wilbert, flowers are provided by the District 8 Funeral Directors Association, and the Gift of Hope Network will provide coffee and donuts for attendees.
