NG9 1 1 Case Study: Nashville School Shooting

In this session, representatives from the Metro Nashville Department of Emergency Communications, AT&T, and RapidDeploy discussed the impacts of a mass shooting that occurred at The Covenant School and how the art of the possible in a fully deployed NG9-1-1 environment
might have reduced the response timeline to the incident. Dami Bullock, Chief Revenue Officer for RapidDeploy, discussed how technologies that are available today could provide resilient cloud-native solutions, interoperability, and enhanced situational awareness. For example, Ms. Bullock highlighted how AI video surveillance technology could detect the presence of a firearm on the school property and alert 9-1-1 centers and the school. Additionally, Jimmy Lichtenstein, Principal Architect AT&T Public Safety Solutions, AT&T, discussed the possibility of providing real-time visualization of data, such as monitoring the movements of the shooter inside the building.

The session provided an analysis of how rapid technological advancements such as NG9-1-1 and integrated emergency response solutions have the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency responses nationwide. As Metro Nashville Department of
Emergency Communications Assistant Director Paul McCallister noted, the Metro Nashville Department of Emergency Communications impressively managed the incident at the time, and "what we're talking about today is the art of the possible and how to help those in the 9-1-1 center do something even greater than they did on this day."
