BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Matthew Montgomery, of Chatham, was recently named recipient of the 2024 Illinois Certified Crop Adviser Award in recognition of his exemplary service and knowledge in nutrient management and crop production.
The CCA Award, the top award from Illinois Farm Bureau and the Certified Crop Adviser Board, is designed to increase awareness that farmers and their crop advisers strive to make economically and environmentally sound cropping decisions. The award recognizes an individual who is highly innovative and performs superior service for their farmer customers in nutrient management, soil and water management, integrated pest management and crop production.
Montgomery is a leader in studies on red crown rot in soybeans, which has largely been misidentified over the last few years. His work has created more awareness of the disease and has prompted an agriscience business to dedicate resources to find new practices for managing the disease.
In addition to his studies on red crown rot, Montgomery is highly involved in helping growers through their daily field decision making processes. His growers will often call Montgomery for his insight and opinions during every crucial part of the planting, growing, and harvest seasons. He also routinely speaks with Western Illinois University's agronomy classes and often takes on students and young professions for job shadowing so they can learn more about what it's like being an agronomist.
Montgomery will be recognized at the IAA Annual Meeting and the Illinois CCA Conference. As this year's CCA Award winner, he will also be considered for the International CCA Award.
