New Dem Leaders Applaud Successful Medicare Negotiations to Lower Cost of Prescription Drugs

Washington, D.C. - Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) and Health Care, Substance Use, and Mental Health Task Force Chair Terri Sewell (AL-07) issued a statement following the Biden-Harris Administration's announcement that Medicare has reached agreements to lower the cost of all 10 prescription drugs selected for the first round of price negotiation.

"Today's announcement is a victory for Seniors, people with disabilities, and any American who's ever had to choose between paying for life-saving medications or putting food on the table. Powered by the historic legislation New Dems championed in the House two years ago, Medicare has delivered on our promise to lower the costs of some of the most common and expensive prescription drugs.

"From diabetes to arthritis, heart failure to cancer, Medicare enrollees will pay up to 80 percent less when treating chronic and life-threatening illnesses thanks to price negotiation, saving an estimated $1.5 billion in just the first year of the program.

"Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats have capped the price of insulin at $35 a month, limited out-of-pocket costs, and now slashed the costs of key medications for Seniors. We've come a long way, but New Dems won't stop fighting until every American can live a safe, healthy, and prosperous life without breaking the bank."
