EU Statements on the Human rights situation in the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia and on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

In June 2024, the European Union delivered two statements at the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers meetings. They were made on the Human rights situation in the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation, and on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

On 5 June 2024, the EU delivered a statement at the Committee of Ministers' meeting on the on the Human rights situation in the territories of Ukraine temporarily controlled or occupied by the Russian Federation, following the Secretary General's report of 24 May 2024 on the matter. In the statement, the European Union, on behalf of its Members States and aligned partners, reaffirmed its support for Ukraine, and called on Russia to cease its aggression, withdraw its troops beyond Ukraine's internationally recognised borders, and release all of the prisoners of war, civilians, and children currently detained.

On 1 July, the EU made a statement at the Committee of Ministers' meeting following the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on 26 June. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the absolute prohibition of torture and to stepping up its efforts to end its use. It also recalled it would ensure that the the prohibition of torture remains high on the agenda of the Council of Europe, and we would continue its joint efforts to end impunity for acts of torture.
