Watch for Power Lines While Doing Farm Work

As farmers and field workers enter the busy fall season, Idaho Power offers these reminders to help them stay safe when working outside near electrical equipment.

  • Always assume power lines are energized and dangerous.
  • Look up for overhead power lines and stay a safe distance away from them (at least 10 feet, sometimes more). This includes when operating or moving tall equipment.
    • You can learn the safe working distance for each voltage of power line at idahopower.com/safety. If you are unsure of a line's voltage, call 208-388-2323 for assistance.
  • Watch for guy wires (the support cables for power poles) when operating machinery.
  • When moving or clearing debris from irrigation pipes, move them horizontally, and use a spotter.
  • Never stack anything like hay bales, machinery, or other items under power lines.
  • If you notice a tree interfering with power lines, do not trim the tree yourself. Call Idaho Power to safely prune trees.
  • If you strike a wire or pole, please contact Idaho Power, as it may have weakened the structure or created slack in the line. Call 208-388-2323 or 1-800-488-6151 outside the Treasure Valley.
