Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink met with Japan's Director General Namazu Hiroyuki and Republic of Korea (ROK) Vice Foreign Minister Cho Koo-rae on December 9 to discuss concerning developments in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The three sides shared the view that the deepening military cooperation between the DPRK and Russia, as well as developments in the DPRK's unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs, are deeply destabilizing and pose a grave threat to regional and global security. They also discussed progress on initiatives to further trilateral cooperation to disrupt the DPRK's malicious cyber activities, including illicit cyber-enabled revenue generation, and followed up on the outcomes of the Trilateral Diplomatic Working Group on DPRK Cyber Threats. The United States, ROK, and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to jointly seeking the urgent return of abductees, detainees, and unrepatriated POWs, and promoting respect for human rights in the DPRK.

In the Spirit of Camp David and the commitment to consult, they underscored the importance of maintaining close trilateral cooperation in addressing these threats and promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and restarting dialogue and diplomacy with the DPRK.
