17-Year-Old Previously Tried As A Minor For Double Murder Now Linked To Another Killing After Release
Nearly five years ago, Alfredo Carrera and his friend, José Flores Velázquez, were murdered in South Los Angeles simply for standing in a gang's territory. "It was devastating, honestly," says Cynthia Carrera, Alfredo's sister. Neither man was gang-affiliated. Alfredo was about to become a father, and Jose, a student at UCI, had just accepted a job with NASA. "This was cold-blooded murder. And it wasn't just one person; two innocent people lost their lives for no reason," said Carrera. Seventeen-year-old Shanice Dyer, a member of the East Coast Crips, was charged with premeditated murder by then-District Attorney Jackie Lacey and was set to be tried as an adult. However, that changed when George Gascón took office in 2020. "The public needs to know what's going on," said Michele Hanisee, the Association of Deputy District Attorneys President in LA County. She explained, "One of the many blanket policies Gascón implemented on his first day in office was that no crime committed by a juvenile - no matter the circumstances - would ever be transferred to adult court." As a result, Shanice Dyer was tried as a juvenile. Despite being convicted of two murders, she was in custody for less than four years. "It's still very hard. And now we find out that this person has committed another crime, doing this to yet another family," said Carrera.

Double Shooting Leaves 19-Year-Old Dead In Canoga Park
An investigation is underway following a double shooting that left a teenager dead in Canoga Park Saturday night. The Los Angeles Police Department said the shooting happened at about 11:40 p.m. on the 8300 block of Northgate Avenue. Details on what led up to the violence were not clear. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of them died. The other was critically injured. Police did not release the name of the deceased, but only described him as a 19-year-old. Man Wounded In San Pedro Shooting
A person was hospitalized Saturday after being shot in San Pedro. The shooting was reported about 6 p.m. Saturday at Gaffey Avenue and Santa Cruz Street, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison told City News Service. The male victim was unconscious when officers arrived at the scene, Morgan said. Paramedics took him to the hospital by ambulance and his condition was not available. Officers set up a perimeter in hopes of locating the suspect who was described as a white man in his 20s dressed in black, Madison said. Extra officers were summoned to the scene to manage a crowd that formed, he said.

Smash-and-Grab Burglars Steal ATMs From 2 Sylmar Stores, Surveillance Videos Show
Surveillance videos show smash-and-grab burglars stealing ATMs from two small businesses in Sylmar earlier this week, among the latest of recent thefts that have targeted liquor stores, mini-marts and pharmacies across the San Fernando Valley. Footage recorded at Villalongin Market on Foothill Boulevard, one block from the 210 Freeway, shows an ATM being yanked through the store's front entrance after being chained to the back of a vehicle. The store's owner, Danny Martinez, said the theft left shelves and shattered glass scattered across the parking lot. He estimated the damage to his business to be about $6,000. "It's very unfortunate that things like this are happening across the Valley," he said. "It's heartbreaking because I wake up every day like everybody else does, goes to work. Not only that but we're here for the community, too. We provide a lot of good for the community and create a lot of relationships, and when something like this happens it's very sad."

Police Searching For Thief Who Stole Classic Chevy Corvette In West L.A.
Police are searching for a thief who escaped with a classic Chevrolet Corvette in West Los Angeles. The theft occurred on Sept. 4 in the parking garage of a commercial building on the 12200 block of West Olympic Boulevard, according to Los Angeles police. At around 8:40 p.m., the male suspect entered the underground garage and spotted the parked Corvette. The doors were unlocked which allowed him to quickly enter and drive the car away. The suspect is described as a white man between 25 to 30 years old. He stands around 6 feet tall and was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, dark shorts, gray/white shoes and a black backpack. He was also seen carrying a skateboard. The stolen vehicle is a light blue 1958 Chevrolet Corvette with Rhode Island license plate number 1KJ358. Detectives have released images of the man captured by surveillance cameras hoping someone may recognize him. Anyone with information is urged to call LAPD Auto Detectives at 310-444-1503. Man Fatally Stabbed In Beverly Hills Following Confrontation
Beverly Hills police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man following a confrontation with another individual in the downtown area Saturday afternoon. Police received a call about 2:50 p.m. reporting "unknown trouble" in the 100 block of Spalding Drive, the department said in a statement. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from a stab wound and transported him to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries. The investigation is ongoing but initial findings indicate there was a confrontation between two male subjects; the other man involved is cooperating with the investigation. There is no threat to public safety at this point, police said. A witness at the scene told NBC4 Newsthat the man who was stabbed had tried to assault another man who was carrying a baby in his arms. The witness was in his car and pulled over to intervene. The assailant "was not present, he was having some kind of psychotic break, and so it was kind of scary," according to the witness, who asked to remain anonymous. He said the man - who had a deep gash on his face - then turned his attention to the witness's car and tried to grab his dog out of the back seat. The same witness told ABC7that the assailant then stumbled over to a nearby apartment building and started banging on the windows. Police arrived and used a taser on the man before taking him away, he said.

Authorities Seek Help Locating Man, 39, Last Seen In East LA
Authorities sought the public's help Friday in finding a 39-year-old man who depends on medication and was last seen in East Los Angeles. Richard Vasquez was last seen in the 5300 block of Dewar Street around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Vasquez was described as a 5-foot-8-inch tall Hispanic man weighing 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has a goatee, a tattoo that says "76" on his neck and a Virgin Mary tattoo on his right hand. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and gray pants. Sheriff's officials said that Vasquez's family is growing concerned about his well-being due to his medical condition. Deputies presumed Vasquez to be in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles. BWC: Man Crashes Vehicle In Cemetery, Raises Gun At Colorado Officers Before OIS
Fort Collins officers fired the first shot in July's deadly shootout between police and an armed suspect near City Park after the man pointed a rifle in their direction, according to body-worn camera footage released Wednesday. "He's pointing his rifle right at us," an officer can be heard saying in the video footage seconds before the first gunshot rings out. "Is that him or you?" "Me," the second officer replied. In the body-worn camera footage, gunfire echoed down the otherwise quiet Fort Collins street and through Grandview Cemetery as officers and the suspect - later identified as 42-year-old Clayton Pierce - shot back and forth at each other. As the first two responding officers took shelter behind their police car during the gunfight, one was shot in the arm and Pierce fled into the cemetery, the video shows. On July 21, officers initially responded to reports of a single-vehicle rollover crash at the intersection of West Mountain Avenue and South Bryan Avenue near Grandview Cemetery. Bystanders initially tried to help the driver, Pierce, and make sure he was alive but fled when the man grabbed a rifle, according to an audio recording of the 911 call released Wednesday.

Virginia Search And Rescue Dog Dies While On Mission With Sheriff's Office
Officers announced the tragic death of a heroic German shepherd who served over 100 missions in Virginia. The K-9, named Maddy, died Sept. 20 after coming into contact with a toxic substance during an operation with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office, authorities said in a Sept. 23 Facebook post. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of such a dedicated hero," officers said in the post. The sheriff's office said the K-9 became ill after the mission and went to an emergency veterinarian who confirmed the dog ingested a harmful substance. After spending the night at the vet, officers said they received the news that Maddy's kidneys were failing. Maddy died surrounded by family, GARD K9 Search and Rescue said in a Sept. 20 Facebook post. "Maddy's life is one you read about in storybooks," GARD K9 officials said. GARD K9 Search and Rescue said the German shepherd was abandoned as a puppy and found at a Kentucky cemetery in 2013. Three years later, the K-9 became a certified state volunteer team with handler Andrew Piske, according to the post. Over eight and a half years, the team worked with law enforcement throughout Virginia and with federal agents - in one instance saving a life, GARD K9 said. "From a small abandoned puppy to a hero. We will miss you K9 Maddy," GARD K9 said.

Person Killed In Vehicle Crash At Freeway Connector Road Near Griffith Park
One person was killed and three others injured Sunday morning during a single-vehicle rollover crash at a freeway connector road near Griffith Park, authorities said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics rushed three people - one in grave condition and two in critical condition - to a hospital, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crash occurred about 12:50 a.m. at a freeway connector from the eastbound Ventura (134) Freeway to the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported. A white sedan was found on its roof, partially blocking the slow lane. The CHP said the vehicle was "cut apart by fire." One person was ejected from the vehicle and two others were trapped inside, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. A fourth made it out on their own. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to free the two trapped patients, Prange said.

Two Cars Slam Into Buildings In Pico Union; Crashes Separated By Less Than 15 Minutes
Two different cars slammed into two different buildings in Pico Union early Saturday evening and authorities say that the incidents were separated by less than 15 minutes. The first crash, which was reported at around 7:40 p.m. at a business in the 1500 block of Venice Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Firefighters say that the crash started as a two-car collision, which sent one of the cars veering into the building. One person was hospitalized and two others were evaluated by paramedics at the scene, said Los Angeles Fire Department officials. It's unclear what caused the first crash and crews were working to remove the car from the building, which appeared to be a shipping company called Central De Envios. Just about 12 minutes later, crews were sent to the 2400 block of Pico Boulevard after learning of another similar incident, according to firefighters. They arrived to find another car had gone into a building, this time what looked to be an auto shop. The crash again began as a two-car collision, which send one of the cars hurtling into the business, firefighters said. The second car caught fire but the flames were quickly extinguished.

Firefighters Achieve Near Full Containment Of Three Wildfires In California
The three major wildfires burning across Southern California are nearly fully contained. The Airport Fire in Orange and Riverside counties is 95 percent contained. It has scorched 23,526 acres since its inception on September 9th and has destroyed over 100 homes. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) says the fire currently remains within its containment lines and crews continue to make progress to achieve full containment. All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted. Elsewhere, in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, the 54,878-acre Bridge Fire was 97 contained weeks after its inception on September 8th. Also, in San Bernardino County, the Line Fire, was 83 percent contained. It started September 5th by arson and has destroyed one structure and damaged four others, while resulting in injuries to four firefighters.
