Allred Statement on $400 Million CHIPS Act Investment in GlobalWafers Semiconductor Production in Sherman

DALLAS- Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) released a statement applauding $400 million in funding from the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which he helped pass, being awarded to GlobalWafers. The funding will help bring critical semiconductor production back to the United States and create over 2,500 jobs at facilities in Sherman, Texas and in St. Peters, Missouri.

The announcement comes afterSamsung received $6 billion in CHIPS Act funds in April to expand and invest in operations in the Austin area.

"Few states are benefiting from the CHIPS Act like Texas, and I am proud that thanks to our bipartisan work, we are growing this industry and creating more jobs here in Texas," said Allred. " I'm so excited that this investment is coming to our region which has long been a leader in semiconductor and high-tech manufacturing. I will keep working to ensure the CHIPS Act continues to create opportunities to grow our Texas economy."

This CHIPS investment would support the construction of new wafer manufacturing facilities to advance U.S. technology leadership while creating 1,700 construction jobs and 880 manufacturing jobs.

Silicon wafers are a foundational input used in all chips, making them critical components in semiconductor production. This investment would allow GlobalWafers to establish our country's first 300mm silicon wafer manufacturing facility for advanced chips in Sherman, Texas. The production of 300mm silicon wafers is essential for efficient manufacturing of leading-edge chips, mature-node chips, and memory chips.

Allred has consistently delivered for semiconductor manufacturing in North Texas during his time in Congress. Allred helped lead the bipartisan, bicameral Building Chips in America Actto streamline the permitting process and maximize the benefits of the CHIPS Act while maintaining environmental protections. As a part of the CHIPS Act, Allred supported Southern Methodist Universityin Dallas as one of 31 Tech Hubs across America. He also helped secure $400,000 for the University of Texas at Dallasto strengthen their work on semiconductor research and helped secure funds for semiconductor workforce trainingat the University of Texas at Dallas.
