UW Partners With Argonne National Laboratory to Access Lab’s High-Performance Computing Systems

The University of Wyoming and the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have partnered to provide UW students and faculty with access to the lab's state-of-the-art high-performance computing systems as a means of extending computational resources for research projects.

The partnership makes Argonne's high-end computing resources available to UW via the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility's (ALCF) Lighthouse Initiative. UW is the third university to join the program, following the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois-Chicago, each of which partnered with ALCF earlier this year.

"This is an incredible opportunity for a select number of UW students and faculty to tap high-performance computing resources that would otherwise be difficult to have dedicated access to," UW President Ed Seidel says. "We are thankful for the opportunity with ALCF, which adds yet another facet to UW's world-class research capabilities."

ALCF Lighthouse institutions such as UW receive a discretionary allocation of computing resources along with intensive training on use of ALCF systems. The program is designed to support researchers who want to boost their computational resources with leading-edge systems.

We look forward to empowering a new generation of computing professionals and researchers with access to leadership-class systems."

Access to the high-performance computing systems by UW faculty and students will break boundaries on potential projects, says Suresh Muknahallipatna, UW professor of electrical engineering and computer science and UW's faculty director for computing resources. Muknahallipatna oversees UW's computing infrastructure, including the high-performance computing systems now available through the Lighthouse Initiative.
