PENANG, 30 September 2024 - USAINS Holding Sdn. Bhd., in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), recently organised the STEM Explorance 2024, a one-day event designed to inspire and engage underprivileged children in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Held during the September school holidays, this programme offers young learners in grades 1 through 6 the chance to participate in dynamic STEM activities that connect education to real-world applications.

STEM Explorance 2024 is part of a broader initiative by USAINS and USM to provide underprivileged students, particularly those from the B40 community, with hands-on access to quality STEM education.

Acknowledging that these students often face unique challenges and can be marginalised, the programme aims to bridge educational gaps and nurture a love for STEM fields in a friendly and supportive environment.

"We are thrilled to have brought this groundbreaking, fully sponsored programme to young learners, aiming to bridge the educational gaps in the B40 community," said the Group Managing Director of USAINS, Farid Wajidi Mat Yusoff.

"STEM Explorance 2024 takes an innovative approach to fostering intellectual curiosity and igniting excitement for STEM education.

"This programme offers children a platform to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through engaging, hands-on experiences that are both educational and fun. We have even featured a live Barn Owl as part of the STEM Explorance 2024, which had added an unforgettable element to the day," he said.

In expressing his gratitude, Farid said, "We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to our principal sponsor, The Yayasan Amal, Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang."

The event, hosted at USAINS in Bukit Jambul, featured a variety of engaging activities, among them was the live demonstration with barn owls, learning about their role as biological pest control agents.

Participants also had the opportunity to build and race their own solar-powered cars, introducing them to renewable energy and engineering concepts.

A skincare chemistry activity taught students how to blend natural ingredients to create lotions, hence reinforcing eco-friendly practices, while a drone demonstration showcased the future of technology and its diverse applications.

To add a playful touch, there was also a paintball target challenge session designed to enhance focus and coordination.

Meanwhile according to the head of USAINS Group Corporate Communication, Wan Nur Izah Wan Noordin, "By engaging students in these hands-on activities, STEM Explorance 2024 not only inspires the next generation but also supports USAINS in its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles."

She further said, "Socially, the initiative fosters inclusivity by providing underprivileged students with equal access to quality STEM education."

"This aligns with USM's key performance indicators related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on quality education (SDG 4) and reducing inequalities (SDG 10)."

She added, "Together, we are building a brighter future for our young learners and promoting sustainable practices in our community."
