Bismarck Fire Department Holds Annual Training Using Battery-Operated Rescue Tools

The Bismarck Fire Department (BFD) has recently conducted their annual extrication training, which prepares firefighters to rescue people trapped in vehicles after accidents. This year's training highlights the emerging technology of battery-operated equipment, which will make the rescue process faster and safer.

Extrication is the process of removing people from vehicles when they are trapped after a crash. This can be a dangerous job that requires strong, reliable tools and well-trained firefighters. The battery-powered equipment the BFD uses includes powered cutters, spreaders, and rams, which are lighter, quieter, and easier to move than older tools. These tools help firefighters cut through metal, pry open doors, and safely remove victims from wrecked vehicles.

In the past, BFD used tools that had to be connected to a gas-powered engine for a power source, limiting mobility. Since purchasing the battery-operated tools firefighters have more freedom to move around accident scenes. Since they don't rely on external power, the tools can be used in hard-to-reach places such as remote crash sites with much more efficiency. The battery tools are also quieter and safer, which is important when working in dangerous and time-sensitive situations, and allow for better communication without the noise of equipment running in the background.

The BFD would like to thank Ace Towing for allowing us to conduct our annual extrication training at their facility and for the past years. It's a tremendous help in preparing our firefighters for when the need arises.
