SCHOOL ZONE TRAFFIC SAFETY

Published: 08/11/2024

It's that time again for our littles, and not-so-littles, to head back to school, which means… Lots of traffic activity in our school zones. Here are some traffic safety tips to help us all get our kids to school safely.

PARENTS & GUARDIANS:

Plan Your Route Early: Familiarize yourself with the school's drop-off and pick-up procedures. Arrive early to avoid the rush.

Use Designated Drop-off Zones: Always use the school's designated drop-off and pick-up areas. Avoid double parking or stopping in crosswalks.

Watch for Pedestrians: Be extra vigilant for children crossing the street, especially in school zones. Kids can be unpredictable, so slow down and keep a close watch.

Obey School Zone Speed Limits: School zones usually have reduced speed limits during certain hours. Adhere to these limits to ensure children's safety.

Avoid Distracted Driving: Put away your phone and focus entirely on the road, especially in school zones.

Follow Crossing Guards: Always follow the directions of crossing guards. They are there to keep everyone safe.

Be Patient: Expect delays on the first few days of school as everyone gets used to the routine. Stay calm and patient.

STUDENTS:

Use Crosswalks: Always cross streets at designated crosswalks and obey pedestrian signals.

Look Both Ways: Before crossing, look left, right, and left again to make sure the road is clear.

Stay on the Sidewalk: Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. If there isn't a sidewalk, walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles.

Pay Attention: Don't use headphones or your phone while crossing streets. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Wait for the Bus Safely: Stand at least three giant steps away from the curb while waiting for the school bus.

DRIVERS:

Watch for Children: Be especially cautious in neighborhoods and near schools where children may be walking or biking.

Stop for School Buses: When a school bus has its stop sign extended, you must stop in both directions unless there's a physical divider.

Slow Down: Reduce speed in school zones and residential areas, especially during school start and end times.

Be Aware of Bicycle Riders: Young children on bikes can be unpredictable. Give them plenty of space and be prepared for sudden movements.

BICYCLISTS:

Wear a Helmet: Always wear a properly fitted helmet for safety.

Follow Traffic Signals: Obey all traffic signs and signals, just like a car would.

Ride in the Right Direction: Always ride in the same direction as traffic, not against it.

Use Hand Signals: Signal your turns so that drivers know your intentions.

By following these tips, we can all partner together in keeping our kids safe!
