Los Angeles City firefighters have collected critical funds in the community since 1954 - one dollar at a time - as part of the "Fill the Boot" program for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). During our 70th year, we will be continuing this long-standing tradition, as our members kick off the annual program raising funds to support MDA's vision to accelerate research, advance care, and advocate for the support of MDA families.
Dedicated firefighters from your LAFD will hit the streets, asking pedestrians, motorists, customers, and other passersby to donate to MDA on May 29, 30, and 31 from 8 AM to 12 PM at locations across the city.
Individuals and local businesses can also contribute to firefighters' fundraising efforts by donating online at: https://filltheboot.donordrive.com/team/LACity24
The partnership between MDA and the International Association of Firefighters began in 1954 when the IAFF signed a proclamation designating MDA its charity of choice and vowing to continue raising awareness and funds until cures are found. To date, the nearly seven-decade partnership has raised more than $700 million with involvement from over 300,000 firefighters nationwide. These funds have led in part to over a dozen FDA-approved drugs in as many years for those with neuromuscular disease. Those treatments were created from MDA's vision to open a new field of medicine and push the boundaries of the medical frontier we call genetic medicine.
"What the IAFF has done for MDA over the past 68 years is unprecedented," said Donald S. Wood, Ph.D., President and CEO of MDA (quoted two years ago). "With the support from our partners at the IAFF and UFLAC Local 112, MDA is doing the impossible in accelerating research, advancing care, and advocating for people living with neuromuscular disease. We have a mission to empower the people we serve to live longer, more independent lives and we will fulfill this mission together, with UFLAC."
"Participating in Fill the Boot is our way of letting the communities we serve know that we are responding on the front lines and responding to your calls for help by assisting our neediest community members in the fight of their lives," said UFLAC President Freddy Escobar.
"Every day, our firefighters go beyond the call of duty," said Los Angeles City Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley. "Partnering with the MDA is a long-standing tradition and it makes me proud that our members have an unwavering drive and passion to be out in our communities collecting donations to assist in much-needed therapy, education, research, advocacy, and support of neuromuscular diseases."
