Denton Parks and Rec Shares Essential Water Safety Tips

DENTON, TX, May 6, 2024 - Withswimming season fast approaching, Denton Parks and Recreation is dedicated to ensuring everyone enjoys water activities safely. Here are severalsafety tips, endorsed by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance and other experts, to keep you safe in, on, and around water.

Open Water Safety Tips:

  • Swim in Designated Areas: Always swim within the marked swimming zones.
  • Never Swim Alone: Use the buddy system to ensure someone is always looking out for your safety.
  • Be Weather-Wise: Before heading out, check the latest weather and water conditions. Know the water temperature and carry the necessary equipment.

Lifejacket Guidelines:

  • Wear It Right: Always wear a US Coast Guard-approved lifejacket that fits snugly without rising above the ears. Ensure all straps are securely fastened.

Sun Protection Measures:

  • Apply Sunscreen Properly: The American Red Cross recommends applying sunscreen at least 15 minutes before exposure, reapplying every two hours.

(About National Water Safety Month)National Water Safety Month, celebrated each May, is a collaborative effort involving key organizations like the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance, American Red Cross, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, National Recreation and Park Association, and the World Waterpark Association. Originally establishedby the World Waterpark Association in June 2003 as National Water Safety Week, this initiative evolved into a month-long campaign in May 2007 to align with the increase in swimming activities across the country.
