University of New Mexico honors 2024 Paul Bartlett Ré Peace Prize winners

The University of New Mexico announces the 2024 Paul Bartlett Ré Peace Prize winners. This biennial award celebrates UNM students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, or volunteers who have significantly contributed to fostering peace, harmony, and understanding globally.

The prize will be awarded during a special virtual event scheduled for Thursday, May 23, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. MDT. The ceremony will be accessible via Zoom, with details available at https://unmfund.co/PaulReZoom.

2024 Award Recipients

General Category Winner

• Katie Stone: As executive director of New Mexico's nonprofit The Children's Hour Inc. and former volunteer producer at KUNM, Katie Stone has devoted over two decades to promoting understanding and empathy among children worldwide through the innovative radio program, "The Children's Hour."

Lifetime Achievement Winners

• Charlene Delaunay: A Northern Arapaho tribe member and an award-winning writer, Delaunay has spent over 40 years promoting civil rights and indigenous cultural practices, enriching educational experiences in diverse international and tribal settings.
• Selma Ćatović Hughes: Recognized for her extensive contributions to architecture and mixed media art, Ćatović Hughes explores themes of identity and heritage in post-conflict societies, significantly impacting academic and creative industries through her international work.

Emerging Promoter of Peace Awards

• Mario Del Angel Guevara: Renowned for his role in UNM's Curanderismo Traditional Medicine Program, Del Angel Guevara's educational initiatives have empowered thousands globally, focusing on traditional healing and personal wellness.
• Kelly Luzzi: An inspiring teacher at Cibola High School, Luzzi has effectively created a safe, inclusive educational environment through her classroom mediation program, addressing critical social issues and fostering a community of mutual respect and understanding.

The selection committee, which included sustainability expert Susan Morrison; interim Dean Leslie Donovan, UNM Honors College; and engineer David Muñoz, a 2016 Paul Ré Peace Prize winner, highlighted this year's winners' diverse and impactful approaches to promoting inner and outer peace.

"The 2024 awardees demonstrate how UNM affiliates are having a profound, harmonizing influence from locally to globally," said Paul Ré, prize sponsor and internationally recognized artist. "They have accomplished this in diverse disciplines while nurturing inner and outer peace. This is particularly refreshing and hopeful in these challenging times."
