For indie music fans, today is the birthday of Vernor Winfield MacBriare Smith IV, who legally changed his name to MacBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco, but is better known as singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco. In his 34 short years, his output has been impressive at five full-length studio albums, as well as what he calls two "mini-albums," which vinyl fans would call EPs. Notably, DeMarco's songs feature flat drums with no reverberation and-almost exclusively-vintage guitars, including a 1970 Stratocaster, a 1960 Mustang, and a 1983 Yamaha DX7 digital synthesizer. The DX7 was manufactured from 1983 to 1989 and is one of the best-selling synthesizers in history that can be heard on Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone," Kool and the Gang's "Fresh," and tons of tracks from Phil Collins, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, and nearly every song on DeMarco's 2014 debut "Salad Days."
