Czech nuclear production in 2021 tops 30 TWh on Dec 23

Prague, Dec 23 (CTK) - This year's electricity generation by Czech nuclear power plants Temelin and Dukovany surpassed 30 terawatt hours (TWh) today, exceeding this level for the third year in a row, Ladislav Kriz, spokesman for the plants' operator CEZ, told CTK today.

The plants faced complicated shutdowns in connection with equipment renovation and modernisation, especially at Dukovany, but their operation was very stable and reliable, which helped them achieve the 30 TWh milestone eight days earlier than last year, Kriz said.

Czechia's gross consumption amounted approximately to 71.4 TWh last year.

According to CEZ, Czech nuclear power plants saved over 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

"Emission-free sources make up more than 60 percent of our total production and their share grows every year," said CEZ's board chairman and CEO Daniel Benes.

CEZ, the largest Czech energy company, provided some 75 percent of the 81.4 TWh of power supplied by all power plants in Czechia last year. The goal of its nuclear energy division set in 2017 is to meet or exceed the 30 TWh mark every year.

CEZ is about 70 percent owned by the state via the Finance Ministry.

Dukovany started to be built in 1978 and its four units were launched between 1985 and 1987. A new unit is to be built in Dukovany to replace the old ones.

Temelin is the largest energy source in Czechia. CEZ put the plant into operation in December 2000.
