Cooperation between Italy and Congo-Brazzaville is being consolidated, thanks to the contribution of the Sant'Anna School of Pisa, which, for the first time, has organized a advanced training course targeting 20 congolese magistrates and judges. On Monday, May 6, the new advanced training course, coordinated by Andrea de Guttry, Full Professor of International Law at Sant'Anna School, began with the support of the italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the collaboration of the Ministry of Justice of Congo, focusing on international judicial cooperation.

This project aims to enhance the capacity of congolese magistrates and prosecutors to collaborate with colleagues around the world to strengthen the fight against terrorism and other crimes. The lessons aim to consolidate local magistrates' knowledge of the national and international legal framework for international judicial cooperation, including through the analysis of practical cases, a key tool for consolidating the rule of law in Congo and generally strengthening the fight against international crime.

The project, financed by the italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and promoted in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Congo, involved the participation of Italian, international and local lecturers with relevant expertise in the assistance and protection of victims of terrorist actions. Notable among them were Pierpaolo Rivello, attorney general emeritus of the Court of Cassation, and Alberto Pasquero, lawyer and consultant.

The strategic relevance of this initiative for cooperation between Italy and Congo is attested by the participation of the ambassador of Italy in Brazzaville, Enrico Nunziata, and the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Congo himself, Ange Aimé Wilfrid Bininga, as well as by the presence of the ambassador of the European Union in the Congo, Giacomo Durazzo, who, with their presence, honored the opening ceremony of the advanced training course.

The organization of this new advanced training course for the benefit of Congolese judicial actors is part of the project "Strengthening the judicial systems of African countries through training (2022-23)," in which the Sant'Anna School has been engaged for several years in training and assistance activities in the Sahel region. For the success of this activity, the support guaranteed by the Farnesina and the Italian Embassy in Brazzaville has always proved decisive.

"The Sant'Anna School is proud to contribute to this important technical assistance project - says Andrea de Guttry, as director of the course - which aims to strengthen the skills of those working in the justice sector. We are convinced that through cooperation and strengthening of judicial institutions it is possible to promote the rule of law in a key area for the stability of the African continent and Europe".
