Vienna,2022-01-05 - According to first preliminary results from Statistik Austria, a total of 1 918 persons died in calendar week 50 (13 to 19 December 2021), which is 205 fewer than in the previous week. Compared to the five-year average for the same calendar week of the years before the start of the Corona pandemic (2015-2019), 19% more people died in calendar week 50 of 2021. In contrast, compared to calendar week 50 of 2020, when 2 478 deaths were recorded, there were around 23% fewer deaths in the week of 13-19 December 2021.
"In mid-December, the number of weekly deaths declined noticeably and fell below 2 000 for the first time since the second week of November. With 1 918, the number of deaths was still 19% above the average of the same calendar week of the pre-Corona period 2015 to 2019, but around 23% below the previous year," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
